Adik Nizam Touches Hearts
The Sky Garden at Menara TM reverberated with excited shrieks amidst good-natured banter and raucous shouts when Unilever Malaysia held a special Touching Hearts auction cum food-sale in the early afternoon hours on 24 July.
To on-lookers cajoled into joining in the noisy affair, the occasion could have been mistaken as though a bazaar had set up shop at the Sky Garden.
The weather was kind but balmy thanks to the goodness and generosity that shone through the kind hearts of Unileverites at the HQ office as they took an extended Friday lunch-break in their quest to bring some comfort and joy for sickly Mohd Nizam Abdul Karim, a five-year old from Kampung Merbau Sempak Tambahan in outskirt Selangor who suffers from excessive fluid in his brains rendering him to be permanently bed-ridden.
The Touching Hearts committee organised a Charity Auction exclusively to raise funds to help Adik Nizam, as he is fondly known to his grandparents who are his main care-givers. Unileverites were encouraged to “donate” their unwanted but still-valued personal items for the auction while others were roped in to indulge in a food-fair offering a tasty variety of savoury food and sweet desserts.
The three-hour long auction and food-fair raised approximately RM5,500 which was used to purchase basic necessities for Adik Nizam such as milk, cereals, diapers, a new bed and mattress. In addition, grocery supplies were also purchased for the family while Adik Nizam’s nine-year-old sister, Hanisa, was presented with school uniforms, stationery and essentials to enable her to resume her studies at school from which she had dropped-out earlier this year due to financial constraints.
The amount also included a commitment from 19 generous Unileverites who pledged to commit between RM10 and RM50 a month to tide Adik Nizam and his family over the next six months for their daily living expenses.
