School Break Fun For Kids

The year-end December school holidays ranks among the most carefree moments for Malaysian school-goers, offering a respite from homework, examinations and the long-hours spent in classrooms.
Under the banner of ULM’s Touching Hearts programme, Unileverites set work aside and took the opportunity to bring muchwelcomed school break fun for some underprivileged children from Rumah Shalom (of Puchong) and the Ehsan Ash Shakur home in Rawang.
The special junior guests were all excited with the promise of a day at the Mid Valley Megamall, touted as one of the most ‘happening’ shopping malls in the Klang Valley. As the children arrived at the Megamall, each was assigned to a ‘foster parent’ to be chaperoned for the day.
Enroute to Kamdar and Bata for a shopping spree to purchase school essentials, boisterous but happy chatter was evident as the children took in the sights of the elaborate Christmassy decorations which adorned the mall, even as their chaperones indulged in helping them to take photographs for keepsake. Undoubtedly, delighted as they were at the prospect of shopping for their own stuff, it could not be disputed that going-back-to-school was ever topmost in the children’s minds on that day!

The thrills of shopping soon gave way to growing hunger pangs – so the next stop was at the popular The Chicken Rice Shop restaurant where the eager children tucked in on lip-smacking Chinese-styled chicken served with aromatic rice, Ipoh bean sprouts and an array of desserts. To add to the merriment of the already festive mood, those children who were celebrating their birthdays in December added to the cacophony of loud oohs-and-ahs when a birthday cake was rolled out in their honour. The strains of “Happy Birthday” rang out loud and cheerily and it didn’t take long before empty plates were all that remained as birthday reminders. All the children were also presented with custom-designed Unilever school bags.
More carefree delights were in store for the children as they then trooped their way to the mall’s third floor to watch a special screening of the movie “The Princess & The Frog” – complete with treats of popcorn!
