Believing that education is key to avoiding road-accidents, Unilever ( Malaysia) Holdings Sdn Bhd (Unilever) collaborated with the National Road Safety Department (Majlis Keselamatan Jalan Raya or MKJR) to drive home the road safety message to 350 students from 21 schools in the Gombak district.

Hosted at the SMK Rawang school, the ‘Safe Travel Awareness Day’ officiated by Road Safety Department Deputy Director-General Mr Sim Say Keong was especially targeted at secondary school students who ride motorcycles to their schools. Also present at the event was Unilever’s Director of Human Resource and Corporate Relations, Nik Mustapha Nik Mohamed.

The day-long programme featured a series of interactive talks and a traffic exhibition while a road safety demonstration jointly coordinated between the Royal Malaysian Police and Harmony Driving Academy provided the students with valuable lessons on defensive driving and safe travel habits. To further drive home the message of safe travel, Unilever also sponsored 350 SIRIM-approved helmets for the participating students.

“At Unilever, safety is at the heart of everything we do. Through the Value Life Value Safety road safety campaign which we launched in September 2006, we remain committed in driving home the message on safe travel and good road safety behaviours to not just our own staff but also to fellow road-users at large. In this instance, for motor-cyclists, wearing a good safety helmet is a must, no matter how long or short one’s journey is. Thus, through this gift of quality and approved helmets, we want to encourage our young road-users to be disciplined on the road and to practise safe travel habits,” said Nik at the launch. The event was endorsed by the Gombak district education department.

While safety was the buzzword for the day, there was also a festive air to the occasion as several booths parading Unilever brands –

Wall’s, Lipton

and

Lifebuoy

– helped rejuvenate the participants with yummy ice cream and

Lipton Milk Tea.

The

Lifebuoy

personal care team was also on-hand to emphasise on general hygiene practices to the youngsters.
